Nainital
Nainital
is the most popular amongst the hill-stations in the Kumaon Himalayas.
Located at an altitude of 1939 metres above the sea level, this lovely hill
town has at its centre the pretty Naini Lake surrounded by seven hills. The
lake and the mall around are the lifeline of Nainital. After the
Naukuchiatal, this is the largest lake in the Lake District.
The name sources its origin to the Hindu goddess Naina Devi. Nain in Hindi
refers to the ‘eye’.
Places to visit in and around Nainital
Kilbury: A beautiful 12 km uphill drive will take you to Kilbury, a
favoured picnic spot for families and friends. It is famous for its flora
and fauna, and is also a great place for birding.
Governor’s House: also known as the Raj Bhavan. This building designed in
the Victorian-Gothic fashion is a must-see on your trip to Nainital.
Naina Devi Temple: situated on the northern edge of the Lake, this temple is
dedicated to goddess Naina Devi on whose name the town has been christened.
These are only three of the many charms of this hill-station. Besides these,
you should also check-out the Ropeway, the Church of St. John, Tiffin Top,
the Gurney House, the Snow-View, the Eco Caves and the Cheena Peak.
Nainital is just an hour’s drive away from Naukuchiatal and you can easily
do a half-day trip during your stay at the Lake Resort. For driving
